Louise Luring wearing a cowl sweater and smiling

In her inimitable style, Louise Luring surprised us again this week. At the monthly meeting of the Our Place Development Committee on Monday, she announced, “Tell people it’s time for me to retire from the board. You may be able to raise some money in my honor… just don’t procrastinate and do it in my memory!” We tried, but we missed that window. Louise died in her sleep that very night.

Louise served on the Our Place board for a quarter of a century and for most of that time, she was the board secretary. She’s been a force behind the organization’s ability to build a supportive community and raise funds. If you’ve ever been to an Empty Bowl event, Louise was there to greet you. If you were on the board, you know her insistence on order and efficiency. Maybe you volunteer at Our Place because of an introduction made by Louise. Maybe she made you laugh as she served you a piece of pie or a cup of strong black coffee.

Our Place is but one of the many places that benefited from Louise's leadership, friendship and service. She knew almost everyone and welcomed the opportunity to create connections. Like Our Place, the Saxtons River Historical Society, the Village Early Learning Center, and the Bellows Falls Women’s Club just lost a treasured board member. She served many terms on the Saxtons River Trustees, including nine years as president. Scores of regional press releases have drawn on her expertise as a journalist and she’s lovingly helped many of us with Spanish, grammar, and spelling. And she was a champion Scrabble player and lifelong Girl Scout.

Louise was an energetic supporter of Our Place and our mission to provide food to our neighbors in need with dignity and respect. Will you please honor her service and continue her vision? Tribute gifts may be made online, by mailing a check to PO Box 852, Bellows Falls, VT 05101 or by visiting Our Place at 4 Island Street. If you wish to leave a note of tribute for Louise, we will make sure your message is delivered to her family.
