Dave’s Notes: Dec. 2024
Our Place Takes a New Name
I am pleased to announce that this month Our Place will be taking a new name. The Directors and I believe it’s time Our Place wears its mission on its sleeve and we make the good work we do more recognizable in our name. Now, I don’t want you to worry—we will still be Our Place, doing the same work for our community that we have always done. It’s just now, we will be doing it with a more easily recognizable name. We will be changing the name from Our Place Drop-In Center to Our Place Community Food Center. The name change highlights the fact that this is a community-funded mission for the benefit of our community and clearly has a focus on food. It’s easy to recognize and easy to understand.
This is the first change in a series of changes we will be making in the coming weeks and months to make Our Place more recognizable in the community, more accessible to those who need us, and most importantly, more focused on protecting the dignity of the people we serve. We will be unveiling a new logo, new website, and over the longer term, making improvements to our building.
We know change can be difficult, but change can also be a breath of fresh air; we are working for the latter. Our Place has been at our Island Street location for 25 years, and these changes will be the platform from which Our Place will launch into the next 25 years. We couldn't be more excited for our future and the future of our community.
If you want to play direct part in this positive change, there are several ways you can get involved. First, we are looking for new directors—consider being on the Board and having a say in the decision-making process. Or consider being a volunteer, whether it’s for a shift at the pantry or during a fundraising event. Last, but not least, you can make a direct donation to in support of our efforts. Be a part of the change.
Holiday Baskets from Our Place
In November, Our Place was able to hand out over 100 meal baskets to deserving people in our community. Each basket was filled with a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, string beans, and gravy for the Thanksgiving holiday. We would like to thank Bazin Brothers Trucking and Burdick’s Restaurant for their generous donation of turkeys for the event.
That’s not the end, though. In the month of December, Our Place will make 100 more dinner baskets for the season’s holidays. By December’s end, we will hand deliver another 100 dinner baskets to members of the community who have a need. We are proud to be able to share this bounty with our community, and we want you to share in that pride with us, because even with the corporate donations, none of it would be possible without you and your generosity and support for our mission—thank you!
Happy Holidays from all of us at Our Place
